With its web of canals, Venice has long been a center for sea trade. Ships from all over the world gathered in the harbors and plied the canals to deliver goods from far away places. At the height of its prosperity, one can imagine being able to cross the piazza simply by stepping from one boat to another as they lay at anchor.
